Sequel to my previous tutorial on how to rename an excel worksheet, I am here again to show you methods you can use to move around in Microsoft excel worksheet.
To be proficient in the use of excel spreadsheet, one needs
to know the different methods by which you can exploit the excel worksheet, move to
cells, ranges, and group of ranges. As you know, Microsoft excel is the second
office application software after Microsoft word a learner should know very well
because it is an important tool for an officeholder, business person, teacher
banker,engineer,researcher,etc.
One can move to any part of a worksheet using either mouse
or keyboard, but the keyboard method is the best. Using this method saves time
and at the same time, it covers a wider reach (many rows and columns can be reached and
select).In this tutorial, I will be focusing on using a keyboard to navigate to
different part of excel worksheet. These are the methods to be discussed in this
tutorial:
- The Tab Key
- The Arrow Key
- The Shift + Tab Key
- Page Up and Page Down
- The Control + Home Key
- Goto (F5 and control +G)
- The Name Box
Moving Around A Worksheet
By using arrow keys, you can move around your worksheet
can use the arrow key to move downward one cell at a time. Also, up arrow key
can be used to move up one cell at a time. The tab key is used to move across
the page to the right, one cell at a time. If you hold down the control key and
press the Home key, it will move the cursor to the beginning of the worksheet.
- Move a mouse pointer to cell A1.
- Press the Tab key several times. Note that the cursor moves.
The arrow keys
also known as direction keys are right, left, up and down keys.
- Press any of these direction keys several times. Note that the cursor moves download, upward, right, and left one cell at a time.
The Shift + Tab Key
- Hold down the shift key and then press tab. Note that the cursor moves to the left one cell at a time.
The Control + Home Key
- Move the cursor to column J.
- Stay in column J and move to row 20.
- Hold down the ctrl key while you press the Home Key. Excel moves to cell A1.
Goto (F5)
The F5 function key is the Goto key. A dialogue box appears
and prompts you to enter the cell address of the cell you which to go. Enter
the cell address, and the cursor jumps to that cell.
- Press F5. The Goto dialogue box appears.
- Type E10 in the reference field.
- Press Enter. Excel moves to cell E10.
Pressing Ctrl + G can perform the same operation as when
pressing F5.
- Hold down the ctrl key while you press “G”. The “Goto” dialogue box appears.
- Type H6 in the reference field.
- Press Enter key. Excel moves to cell H6.
The Page Up and Page Down
- Press the page up key. Note that the cursor moves up one page.
- Press the page down key. Note that the cursor moves don one page.
The Name Box
The name box can perform the same task as F5 and ctrl + G, to
go to a specific cell in a worksheet. Type the address of cell you want to go
to in the Name Box and then press Enter.
- Type A8 in the Name Box.
- Press Enter.excel moves to cell A8.
